Stay Inside The Lines
This series was created beginning in 2005 and may not yet be finished.
The series name comes from the notion of expectations, and wherever the act of conforming is encouraged. As an artist I have encountered situations where folks expect me to simply repeat the same way of working, but I believe it's a matter of pushing various boundaries that draws the Muse near for further consultation. This is simply my way of poking fun at being content with a particular line of questioning--all part of the struggle to keep an open mind--and ask more of ourselves creatively. The shapes have reference to faces and therefore people and personalities. Beyond this, there are other assumptions one can make regarding the shapes, shields and "X's." Some of the titles reflect concerns for humanity and human actions.
Ani DiFranco once asked in her lyrics: "Which One Does Not Belong?"
In her reference to childhood testing, conformity was looked upon as a desired trait, while the child/student/person who chose to move outside of the lines did not belong. I wonder about the disservice we perpetuate by expecting children to prove their worth through a series of elementary and secondary tests , rather than nurturing the act of thinking.
Much of what life has to offer is outside of the lines.
